In May 1941, Charles Upham earned his first Victoria Cross for outstanding gallantry during the German airborne invasion of Crete. On the night of 21 May, he led his platoon in a counter-attack on Maleme airfield, destroying four enemy machine-gun posts with hand grenades, rescuing a wounded man under fire, and guiding a group of isolated soldiers out of enemy-held territory.

Over the following days he repeatedly pushed forward alone to engage German positions with grenades. During one encounter he was fired upon by two enemy soldiers; feigning death, he waited until they approached before killing them both.
